The Administrative Office is open Monday thru Thursday, 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM, except for holidays and weather emergencies. You can contact us on Friday's from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

How often are the roads graded?

As a general rule:

  • Main roads in the District are graded once a week. 
  • All other roads are graded every other week.

What are the swales for?

Swales located along roadways connect to drainage canals which connect to retaining areas leading to the overall regional system governed by the South Florida Water Management District. 

In our area, many of the swales are constructed to enable water to drain to the nearest canal.  When it rains, water run off from yards and roadways collects in the swales and slowly drains down the road to the nearest canal. 

What can I do to make sure my swale drains properly?

As a resident of the District you can help improve the drainage in front of your property.  Check regularly to make sure that your culvert pipe is not blocked or crushed.  Keep your swale area clear of debris such as lawn debris, garbage, and other items which would cause the water to stop flowing.

How often are the swales mowed?

The District currently mows the swales twice per year. This is to prevent trees from growing in the swale area.

Who owns the canal easement?
The property itself  is owned by the adjacent property owner with a canal/mainteance easement granted to the District.  The easement grants the District certain rights to access and/or improve the property for purposes described in the easement language.

Can I build in the easement?
The District does not allow the property owner to obstruct the easement.  The reason for this requirement is to allow District personnel "unobstructed" access to conduct weed control spraying, mowing, and other canal maintenance activities.  Locked gates, fences, disabled vehicles, ect. impede these activities, and therefor, raise the cost of providing maintenance.  Some people believe that these canal easements are "public property", they are not.  The only people allowed to utilize canal easement are the underlying property owner and the District staff.  All others are trespassing.
